Information for Individuals, Families and Households

New Zealand ShakeOut, our national earthquake drill and tsunami hīkoi, is happening at 9.30 am on 18 October 2018.

Taking part is a great way for your family, and the people you care about, to learn the right actions to take before, during and after an earthquake and tsunami.

Do the ShakeOut

Doing the ShakeOut is as easy as 1, 2, 3!

  1. Sign up now. You can sign up everyone in two minutes.
  2. Spread the word. Tell your friends and family, share on social media, put up posters, etc.
  3. Do the ShakeOut! Drop, Cover and Hold at 9.30am on 18 October 2018*, followed by a tsunami hīkoi if you’re in a coastal area.

* If you cannot do the drill at 9.30 am on 18 October 2018, you can choose a time to suit you within two weeks of the drill (and still be counted).

Get prepared

Once you’ve signed up:

  • Visit the Happens website to find out how to create a household emergency plan and get supplies together for home and work.
  • Secure heavy items of furniture to the floor or wall and visit the EQC website to find out how to quake-safe your home.
  • If you are in a coastal area, check your tsunami evacuation zone and map your evacuation walk. Make plans for your tsunami hīkoi, involving your whanau and community.

Share the ShakeOut

Our Share the ShakeOut page has resources for you to share with your employer, school, or any group you are part of, and encourage them to do the drill together.
